Some people have taken clonazepam only as needed, but it is a longer acting benzodiazepine more suited for longer-term use.  I believe it also take longer to reach its efficacy, which is why most "as needed" benzodiazepine prescriptions are for the quicker -acting (with shorter half-life) Xanax (alprazolam) or Ativan (lorazepam).  If you really want to just take as needed you may want to discuss these other options with your physician.
