converting 4mg/day Ativan to Xanax XR

converting 4mg/day Ativan to Xanax XR

I know the idea is to stick with what works, but I'm tired of taking the 4x/day 1mg Ativan because with the 2nd dose I either at times have to take late ( 30min - 1hr) or skip the dose. One day I even skipped 2 doses in the same day ( the 2nd and 3rd dose ). I'm planning on asking the pdoc Thursday if he has time to see me about taking Xanax XR instead of the Ativan. But I don't know a good conversion or if the shift will affect my seizure threshold.

Any help? Ideas?

Thanks,
Andy...

I think your idea to switch is a good move on your part if you have a seizure disorder and are finding the scheduling difficult, but none of us are doctors on this forum and therefore are not qualified to suggest ANY medication change. Your doctor will know about the conversion rate and if the shift will affect your seizure threshold. But only you and your doctor can make these decisions.
I'm sure something will be found that fits into your lifestyle better.
I wish you the very best.

You need to discuss options with your doctor.  First of all, I think a MUCH better option for you would be a long acting benzo, like Klonopin, versus Xanax XR.  While the Xanax XR is formulated to be an "extended release" form of Xanax, it is still Xanax and still carries the same tolerance issues as the regular xanax.

I think Klonopin would also be a much better option for you as well due to its anticonvulsant properties, if you have a seizure disorder.

Like lydia said...we can only offer suggestions....but perhaps discuss with your doc the pros/cons of Xanax XR vs Klonopin, which would only have to be dosed 2 to 3 times daily.

Best of luck!!
