YESYESYES. I have SEVERE emetophobia and have since I was 2 years old!!
Im sure we can relate on A LOT of things. Many people dont understand emetophobia or just cant imagine why it gives me anxiety.  Actually, I dont either.  But it is awful!! The worst part is, when someone tells me "they feel sick" even if they mean a cold I automatically assume theyre sick to their stomach and are going to throw up.  Then the anxiety starts, then i get nausious as a result from the anxiety, then i get more anxiety cause im nausious and its just one huuuuge horrible terrible god awful cycle.
Well, I finally addressed this issue of emetophobia with my doctor cause i kept missing school and i was ready to kill myself cause its so bad. After experementing with some anti-anxiety medications I found that Pristiq REALLY helps me.  Have you looked into medication or therapy? I could not believe how much my anxiety went away, and became more managable after taking this med.  I have been in therapy...but it doesnt really help me that much, still lots of people benefit from it.
SO anyways,your not alone!

This is a pretty old thread, and will be skipped over by most.  We want you to get the info and support you need, so please start a new thread.

I'll keep my eye out for it.  Take care!

I have the same phobia as you. I've had it for 3 years and it controls my life. Example: my sister and I live in the same house and she has the stomach bug so I locked myself in my room and sometime days at a time. Sometimes id rather not be alive than to throw up even though I would never ever harm myself. I'm still going through but I just wanted to let you know that I'm dealing with the same struggle

I have severe Emetophobia and I've had it all my life. If someone tells me that they feel sick, straight away I will think of them vomiting. Also at the moment, my step-father has gastro and was throwing up all night, all I did was lie in bed and block of the sound with my ears.He has been better today until he said that he wasn't feeling too good.I've been keeping my distance away, I've been staying in different rooms and have basically been unsocializing with them

reading these post i just nod my head in agreement i do everything the same when someone says they feel sick i automatically think its ill sick even if they mean flu sick and then i feel so neausous im the same with once i hear a vomit bug going around i convince myself that i have it and for about 2 weeks i'll feel sick to the stomach i don't drink alcohol at all cause im terrified i'll throw up i don't eat dinner cause for some reason that's when my fear plays up the most i have to leave the house if my partner is sick cause i can't be near him i have no idea why i have this fear i can't recall any horrible incident that's happened to me when i was little. this fear has control of my life i think about it 24/7 and reading these post makes me more sad then happy im sad to hear so many other ppl suffer from this fear and not hearing any success stories im dying to try this 'pristiq' that was mentioned i pray it works for me if it does i'll let you all know :)

It took me awhile to respond bc even talking about my phobia gives me a panic attack. In fact reading posts has made me anxious.

I'm 25 and have had this phobia my whole life. I became agoraphobic over it. Its been so bad sometimes that ill starve myself to avoid vomitting.

The only time I've vomitted in 19 years was when I've been black out drunk. If you can find my job phobia post you can see how terrified I am of getting a stomach virus.

I've often thought about a hypothetical situation of I either have the option of vomitting or death I lean toward death. I am more afraid to throw up than I am to die.

Only my family knows about my phobia. Peoole act like throwing up is no big deal and rationally I know it isn't but my fear is so great that I can't imagine being able to do it.

Glad you found some support in the answers you received. I'm sure you will keep searching for answers and ways to help yourself. For a great many of us, it IS a lifelong search.
I wish you the best of luck and hope you will return anytime you need to talk.
And I know what you mean about being a "hard nut to crack!" At nearly 60 I think they'd have to use dynamite!
Peace

Thank you for answering - it is such a relief to talk to people who actually know what it is like to have a debilitating "hidden" problem like anxiety/phobia.   Its all fear when you get down to it.....mine of losing control i suppose.   I have had much therapy over the years and some of it worked a bit and others did harm rather than good.   After 50 years of it I am quite a hard nut to crack and it is really hard for me to delve deep enough into it to start to wipe it out....but I keep trying and have not given up hope yet.   Finding this site is one of the best things I have ever done!

Welcome to the forum!
I understand what a big step this was for you to write to us regarding your phobia...........so good for you! It's a big step, but only the first.
I'm pretty sure you will receive quite a few supportive posts from others who suffer with emetophobia and that's great.........we all need support and understanding. But...........while you may find great relief in knowing you're not alone with this disorder, (which is far more common than you may think) simply commiserating with fellow sufferers will not help you in the long run. What WILL is getting into therapy to figure out WHY you have emetophobia and dealing with those issues. Why settle for just knowing you're not alone when you can rid yourself forever of this ball and chain?
Please think about it.
I wish you well
Peace

I do not have that fear, but many of us have varying phobias.  I commend you for having the courage to ask.  That in itself is a HUGE step in confronting any form of anxiety in my opinion, so don't sell yourself short for seeking help...give yourself a pat on the back!

Not going specifically what you are going through, I can only speak with my experiences with anxiety and panic.  For me, admitting that I even had a problem was the first step and the next step is doing exactly what you are doing; reaching out for help.  Have you ever considered seeking counseling for your phobia?  I know for me, talk therapy did wonders in confronting and dealing with my anxiety.  Keep your head up and keep us posted.
