i was wondering if you have to taper off xanax before starting klonopin, or can you taper xanax while starting klonopin? i would appreciate any info on this. thanks. remar

Both Klonopin and Xanax come from the same family of medications known as benaodiazepines.

Whereas, Xanax is a fast acting agent with a half life of about 12-15 hours, Klonopin is a slower acting agent with a half life of about 18-50 hours.

Since Xanax has such a short life, you should not have to continue to take it at a reduced level at the same time you start taking Klonopin unless the Klonopin is failing to control your symptoms during the changeover.

Any change or reduction in medication should, however, be directed by your physician.

I have been waiting for my refill of klonopin for about 2 weeks and I have terrible withdrawal symptoms.  I read somewhere that xanax can help with the klonopin withdrawal.  My mother has a prescription for xanax  (1 mg)  so I asked her for one. I took half of it and the symptoms subsided.  I will continue  to take the xanax until I get my refill so at least I have a good escape route for klonopin withdrawal.
