There are no doctors on this forum, just fellow sufferers.  I don't know if there's an expert forum anymore where a doctor answers questions.  I can tell you that nobody knows if an antidepressant will work again for you -- sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.  I don't think your doctor knows anything about these meds and how they work -- is it an experienced caring psychiatrist, or just a regular doc?  Because I assume you mean you were on Effexor, which is a very difficult med, but any med is at its worst with side effects when the dosage is changed, either up or down.  With such an extreme reaction, the dosage should have been lowered back to where you were comfortable, and then options discussed.  You also don't indicate whether you tapered off the Effexor, or were just switched to Zoloft.  Effexor is known for being very difficult to quit, and so it is best to slowly taper off it.  Switching to Zoloft, a medication in a different class, won't necessarily do anything about Effexor withdrawal.  As for long term damage, that's a sore spot for medical professionals, because yes, it can happen, but usually only when mistakes are made by the doctor, and it's not very common.  Just assume there's no long-term damage, and find a very knowledgeable psychiatrist as quickly as possible who knows how to withdraw you from medication and how to properly switch medications.  If you don't like what you're hearing, find a different psychiatrist.  Good luck.
