the klonopin will last for 12 hours, the xanax is more like 4-6 hours.

From a potency standpoint, Klonopin and Xanax are equivalent.

The major difference between the two are their indications. Xanax is indicated for as-needed use only. It is best suited for terminating sporadic panic attacks, or for anticipatory anxiety. It is indicated for infrequent use only. The onset of action is 15-20 minutes, and the duration of effect is four hours. If used chronically, tolerance to the effects result, rendering the drug useless.

Klonopin is indicated for the management and maintenance of panic disorder (characterized as recurring panic attacks). Klonopin, unlike Xanax, works on the principal of accumulation. The maximum benefit is not instantaneous. The maximum benefit is obtained after a period of two weeks, at which point the drug reaches steady-state (a consistent plasma level). This consistent plasma level prevents or minimizes the recurrence of panic attacks (unlike Xanax). Tolerance rarely occurs with Klonopin, thus it is suited for long-term use for prophylaxis against panic. The onset of action after a single dose is 45 minutes - 1 hour, and the duration of action is 12-18 hours depending on the individual.

Thank you for the great explanation!!  It does make me feel better about what I'm doing.  I've been on Xanax for over 12 yrs now, but have managed to keep my dose between 1mg to 1-1/2 mg daily.  Right now I'm in the middle of switching over to Klonopin and it has been given to me to take 1/2 mg twice a day.  I've already noticed feeling better on the Klonopin.  I presume it's because i'm not doing the yo-yo thing anymore.  I've been on the Klonopin for about 6 days now and have taken about 1/4 mg of Xanax daily with it.  My goal is to eliminate the Xanax totally.  Thanks to your explanation about the accumulative effects of the Klonopin after a week or 2 in your system, I feel much better about taking my small dose of Xanax for now.

It's been 32 days now that I'm on Klonopin .5 mg twice daily.  I've been keeping a journal of what I've been doing regarding the Xanax.  Each time I take Xanax I'm taking 1/4 mg, and trying to only use it in cases where the shortness of breath or nausea won't stop. I have yet to take more than 1/4mg of Xanax in one day.   Yesterday I took Pepcid, Rolaids, and Pepto Bismol during the day I was so sick to my stomach.  Finally around 7pm I took 1/4 mg of Xanax and shortly after the shortness of breath and nausea were gone.  After being on the Klonopin for 32 days now, shouldn't the anxiety symptoms be improved enough so that I shouldn't need Xanax anymore?  There are times I can go 3-4 days only taking the Klonopin bid, but then the next day or 2 I'll have to use 1/4mg of Xanax for breakthrough anxiety anyway.  Is it possible my Klonopin dose is too low?  Thanks for any help or advice!
