klonopin and wine question?

I have now been on klonopin for 10 days and it's amazing. I take .025 am and .025 pm.This dose is working very well for me. I cannot even put into words how bad my anxiety and panic attacks were. But I guess you all know how bad it can be. I am not sure how long I will be on it but my Dr. told me not to drink while taking it. Since being on it I have been in several social situations and I was not able to drink. I really miss having a glass of wine with dinner and I was wondering if anyone that is on klonopin has had a drink now and then and what the effects are?
Also when do peopl make the decision to go off klonopin? I am really feeling good now but if I went of the drug now would all the anxiety come back? Thanks .

I am currently on Klonopin 2 mg; twice at bed. If you want to have a drink, give yourself a time window before you take them. I would recommend 6-8 hours; however, if you consume a large quantity, I would not recommend it. Your life is more important than a drink that lasts a short time. You are doing well on the medicine, so stay focused. I have a beer very rarely, but I make time for the alcohol to wear off.
Your life is more important. Think about it.

I take .25 morning, .25 afternoon, .5 at night.  Have been on it for 4 months... and there have been days when I've forgotten to take my medicine (like a weekend trip when I forgot it) and I had no bad reaction whatsoever.  I could feel my anxiety slipping back in, but had no withdrawl symptoms.  (And I know what those are, because I had a horrible time coming off of zoloft years ago after ppd.)

Have wondered about the occasional glass of wine, and may try it some night when husband and I are home on a quiet evening just to see what happens.  He can be my safety net, so to speak.

I love the way this drug makes me feel - not that I get high off of it, but that it takes away my anxiety and makes me so comfortable with myself.  My behaviorial therapy is going SO much better since I began the drug in December.  I cannot tell you how thankful I am for it - and yet hope there is a time when I can eventually go off the drug.  We'll see.

I do miss a glass of wine every now and then though!

>any insight!!!!!

Have you given any thought to taking out a hefty life insurance policy on her? Something to think about!

In all seriousness, make an attempt to schedule a meeting with her prescribing doctor (who is hopefully a shrink), and inform him/her of the drinking situation. The doctor will most likely either warn her to stop, or cut off her Klonopin prescription entirely. Klonopin is a C-IV controlled substance that is regulated by the DEA. Doctors (most of them, anyway) don't take too kindly to mixing drugs and booze, especially when their reputation (and license) is on the line. This may be a good starting point for you, albeit it may wreak hell on your marriage. In the end, you'd be saving her life.

Those who mix drugs and booze to self-medicate will rapidly descend into a downward spiral, and more often than not, it is hell to get out of it. Some form of intervention is in order. You may want to act now while the situation is still within the realm of managable.

Thank you Ryan! That tapering off plan  doesn't sound to terrible.I printed it for future use.Today is day 14 for me I guess I officailly reached "steady state" and I am feeling pretty good. pretty, pretty good. LOL (to quote Larry David)
I have been in several high stress situations these past few days and I didn't have any anxiety or panic. By the way does Klonopin by any chance address depression. I feel much happier but I think it's just because I don't feel anxious.Yeah!

you guys have much more insight than myself.  during my teenage years I believe...??.. a doctor told me that dropping a quarter mg per week was safe.  either way that's what I did, and I've taken(and came off of) 4mg of klonopin under supervision of a doctor at the rate of 1/4 mg per week.  I rested at 2 mgs for a while and then continued dropping.  but then, i consider psychotropic drugs a scourge of hell and was willing to bite the bullet pretty hard.

Also while I was a teen I called poison control to find out the effects of drinking with klonopin(my doctor had advised against it, had also called it "alchohol in a pill").  She said that the main complications were resperatory depression and a slowed heart beat.  But I drank anyway, felt pretty funny at first... By the time taking my daily dose registered no noticeable effect, neither did mixing it with alchohol register a noticeable effect.  woudn't reccomend it though, especially if you have panic attacks.  your heart will go "ping" and you'll think your dying :)

Your crazy low dose has registered an effect in myself in the past.  However doctors have told me that it is safe to stop after reaching an eighth of a mg... any "symptoms" are psychological.  take it with a grain of salt.

when I weaned off, I used the weakest denomination of klonopin, measured my best 1/8ths and would cut those in half if necessary.  I figured it wasn't very accurate but by the time you finish the whole pill it averages out.  just don't cut more than one pill at a time.

I'm off the stuff and don't reccomend taking it long, withdrawals are a beast.
May the best come to you,

Hi Ryan
I 'm sorry I hate fractions. So if I take .025 bid, when I am ready to start weaning off what would a 1/8 increment of that half a pill be? How does one keep splitting those pills? And how many weeks to withdraw from .025 bid? I'm sorry for all these questions you really are so kind to reply and are so helpful.
Thanks.

Ryan writes:  "Correct. The drug is to be withdrawn by no more than 1/8 of a milligram every four weeks (under medical supervision)."

I understand the target dosage is generally 1.5mg/day, usually in three .5mg doses.  This dosage would require nearly one-year for withdrawal at 1/8 mg every 4 weeks.  Is that correct?  Or did I mess up the math?

Ryan thank you for you response. I miss the wine but not that much. I needed to hear that because I am certainly not going to put my health in danger. The part about respiratory depression especially scared me since I have asthma.
If you don't mind I have two other questions. Is it unusual that this low does .025 bid works for me?Are there any other cases where people have had success with this low dose? And if Klonopin should never be stopped abruptly does that mean that even at the dose I am on I would have to taper off? Thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it.

Yes, maybe, no, I don't know.  It is not recommended.  Listen to your doctor.  Well, actually, ask your doctor if it would be okay to have an "occasional" glass.  Personally, I don't see the harm. Nonetheless, I am not a doctor.

I know what you mean about missing that glass of wine, though...

Best. :)
