by negive, Feb 06, 2009 07:50AM
what medicines are generally used for anxiety for long term (i.e. 2years,5years,10years etc) because xanax is used for short term (as i am told on this webside).

I was on Paxil for over 10 years.  It did eventually lose effectiveness, not completely though. It worked quite well at controlling general anxiety, anxiety attacks, and social anxiety, and depression.

Actually Xanax can be used for long term. Most Benzo's can be used for long term. The SSRI's are the ones that are usually used for like term. The most commonly used ones are Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, etc.

Xanax can be used for the long term, but it is not recommened. Xanax is designed to combat the symptoms of a panic attack at it's onset only as it is quick to act and doesn't stay in your system as long. klonopin is used as a daily preventative as it builds up and stays in your system longer than xanax that is why it is better for long term maitanence.

Actually, I agree with Jane and Krissy. Xanax can be used long term in some people. I was on it for 9 years with no dose increase. It is hard to come off of if you go too fast. Most Drs. won't prescibe it because it is additive. So are most of the antidepressants. If I were you I would give Klonopin a try and see how that works. I wish the best for you. Remar
