need advice

I have been taking alprazolam 4 mg a day for about 9 months. I tried to stop after a script was over but I started to feel very ill. I was dizzy, sweaty, and , well just bad. I refilled the script, and just take 3mg a day now, but I still feel "weird" not right. Is this a way to get off of this drug? Should I call my Doctor about this??, or is this normal???? I feel funny calling the Doctor. I just need some advice. Thanks

You must NOT stop this medicine (Xanax) abruptly/cold turkey -  it is very dangerous to do so and very serious side effects can result, including seizure!  It is not suprising you felt very ill when trying to stop the alprazolam as you have become dependant on it and will experience withdrawal effects upon cessation.

You will need to talk to your doctor or pharmacist who can set you up with a tappering regime to get off the xanax, in a SLOW and well-controlled manner.  Weaning yourself off this drug may take up to a few weeks and is best done under medical supervision/advice.

Thanks for your advice. I saw my Doctor and I will reduce my dose by 1/2 a mg every two weeks until I am at 1mg. He wants me to have that much for my anxiety for now. Again thanks for the answer. I was pretty upset.
