new anxiety symptom? getting scared.

On tuesday I tried to work at my old job but I got incredibly anxious and had to leave about 3 hours into the shift. I got home and tried to eat. About an hour after eating I got horrible cramps and had diarrhea. I took a xanax and the cramps subsided and I fell asleep. Wednesday nothing happened but thursday when I woke up I got anxious being at my moms house all by myself so after eating a few saltines I got the crampy feeling and had diarrhea again. I took a xanax and calmed down and was able to eat some mashed potatoes and soup later on. Today I drove home because I thought being at my moms away from all my friends and having nothing to do was stressing me out. So far I haven't had any tummy troubles but the diarrhea really freaked me out. Does anyone else have a problem like that from anxiety?? I'm really stressed about it.

Hope you are doing better this weekend and getting some relaxation. I really hope things work for you and the BF and he learns to understand Anxiety and that it is NOT in your head..It is a chemical imbalance and can be controlled and gotten rid of with help and med's. Anytime you feel like talking I am here. I also suffer from this crap and am getting better the older I get and the more "natural" things I try like meditation tapes, self help books etc..It helps to talk and open up and no that there are others out there that feel just like you!! God bless,

I agree with sgately11
The more you concentrate on what is going on the worse it will get. When it strikes focus your mind on something peaceful like the ocean, or what brings you peace and take long slow deep breaths and say to yourself "this too shall pass" It helps and gets your mind off of the attack. The more you worry the worse it will get and always popping a pill will not solve the problem.. Relaxation, and meditation tapes and positive thinking and talking a walk even when you dont feel like it will really help ease the mind. Mine has gotten better and only take the anxiety meds now when I really need them. Try something new, try imaganery thinking new things like I do not have anxiety, I am at peace, I am safe, I am loved, etc..In time it will get better trust me!!!

Hi Erin,

Careful to build a phobia, which will happen, I know, read my posts. I gave myself heart phobia. What I know being a lifelong sufferer is this. Panic is smart, and it absolutely can manifest physiological symptoms at will. It also will change around your body, one time its your bowels, then it may be your head, weakness, heart, etc etc. Its all the same demon.

This is the toughest thing to do but try to concentrate on something else, or ate least tell yourself each day that this is almost past, the worst is just about over. Any time you give in and think, "wow something is really wrong" you will just end up at the doctors, test after test, with worse symptoms and a clean bill of health.

Good luck with overcoming this.

Hi Erin I forgot to tell you this also,
I was a nurse for 6 years and had a triple back fusion last yr and then lost my job. I hit rock bottom then was told I had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. YES I felt I had no life not working and now 1 yr later still suffer back pain. My Therapist said it's very important I get out of the house and volunteer somewhere to keep my mind busy and feel like I am doing something in life as I can't work now..So I no how stressful it is loosing a job AND BEING BROKE. My unemployment runs out the end of November so I feel your sadness but now that it is one yr later and with Counseling I have learned to live for the moment as they say..Yesterday is gone, today is all we have, and tomorrow may not come.. It took me about 6 months to get over my depression and out of bed after I lost my job and almost my Fiance due to my moods.. YOU have to find a reason to live, love and find inner peace.. Money is not everything but yes we do need to pay the bills..But when you concentrate on WHAT YOU DON'T HAVE, it makes the anxiety worse, believe me been there done that..It WILL get better in time if you have patience and really try and NOT concentrate on the anxiety and concentrate on what you have or what you want as if you already have it and soon the mind tends to follow what you tell it. For all in this Forum I wish you all well and I no how each feel as I live it daily but have gotten better the older and wiser I get!!!

Hi Erin,
I also suffer from Anxiety and am in Therapy right now. I am 46 and have had it for years. Got off Xanax  yrs ago and now the last 3 yrs am on Clonazepam. I have found out that Meditation really helps. I downloaded meditation tapes for free on the Internet, each time I feel overwhelmed I listen to a 5 mint relaxation or stressfree tape, they really help. I no how you feel. Also I read books from my Counselor. THE MORE we concentrate on Anxiety the worse it gets, SO WHEN it hits take some deep deep breaths and believe me it will soon fade. It really works, the point is getting your mind off what you are feeling at the time. I used to be scared to drive and the book says Imagine thinking positive and seeing yourself Anxiety free, the way YOU want to be and soon you will start becoming that person. It really helps to read self help books as all these pills are addicting and just cover up the problem. I hope with GODS help soon someday I can get off all these meds..I also suffer from ADHD and take Ritalin so I am wired allot and can not sleep. My friends state Benadryl really knocks you out at bedtime but for me it does the opposite and wakes me right up.Also if you eat allot of cheese that will help with the Diarrhea which I also suffer from.. Good luck GF and here for you anytime!!
God Bless,
Bettyann

I had chronic stomach problems off and on in my 20s, like constant diarrhea, to this day I am not sure what caused it, maybe anxiety, its gone now. I barely have stomach problems now but all my anxiety seems to be focused on my obsessions with the feeling of irritability. I am back on SSRI's and they do help my anxiety a lot. I feel like anxiety is kind of a form of negative meditating, the person just keeps focusing on one thing until it turns into full blown anxiety.

Oh and today I drove the 3hours from my moms house to my house and the entire way I was starving. I was scared to eat because I didn't want diarrhea on the road but I ate some biscuits when I got home and other than my usual anxious stomach I've been fine

Thanks. I've never had that symptom before...well I have but not as frequent or severe but I have been dealing with a lot more stress lately. I lost my job and I'm completely broke and going back to my old job didn't work out and I was really lonely at my moms house. Then of course I started getting very anxious about the symptom itself. My mom dealt with horrible anxiety when she was my age and developed colitis from it. She told me that she had the same symptoms and plus I've lost my appetite from the stress and haven't been eating well so that probably hasn't helped my stomach troubles at all.

You know how anxiety goes...the reassurance always helps. Still a bit anxious about it but its definitley good to hear that anxiety could be what was causing it.

Anxiety can cause all kinds of troubles, stomach problems are especially common. You are okay and will learn in time all the horrible things anxiety can cause, once you realize its anxiety, it will start not to bother you as much.

Anxiety can wreak havoc with our digestive tracts, causing either diarrhea or an urgency to "go."  This is why many people have to run to the bathroom right before an anxiety creating situation like public speaking.  Do drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, eat bananas, drink orange juice and Gatorade to replenish your electrolytes lost during diarrhea.  Since the Xanax made you feel better I would agree that it's probably your anxiety.  Take care Erin.

I thought after the first bout that it may have been a bug but I was fine on wednesday and only had it happen once on tuesday and once on thursday. I'd imagine if it was a bug itd be a little more constant and wouldn't subside after the xanax. Like I got anxious over the diarrhea and got nauseous and after I took the xanax the nausea and shakiness started to subside and didn't have anymore diarrhea.

While I can understand your fear that some new anxiety symptom is showing up, why not try to relax, which I know is difficult, and see if just perhaps you only had a touch of stomach flu and the symptoms of THAT caused you some anxiety rather than the other way around.
Have you been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and are you on any meds for it? You must have a script for Xanax to be taken PRN (as needed) as twice it helped you cope with the situation.
How are you feeling today?
Perhaps see how it goes through the week-end and if these same symptoms are bothering you come Monday, see your doctor to rule out an organic cause of the diarrhea and perhaps think about some therapy for the anxiety.
Anxiety can cause............or, at least, contribute, to bouts of diarrhea.
Be sure you're drinking plenty of non-surgary fluids for the diarrhea...........it's very easy to become dehydrated.
Peace
