panic attacks and alcohol

by dollffin, Nov 15, 2007 01:59PM
Hi, I have had panic disorder for 20 years.  I control the bad attacks with 1/2 xanax. This happens mabye once a month or so.  I am also newly diagnosed with insulin resistance and take 500 mg of glucophage daily.  My question is about 7 years ago all of a sudden when I decided to have a drink one evening, I drank about half of the drink and my heart started to race and I broke out into a sweat.  Never did that before.  I tried to drink maybe twice after that and the same thing happened, so I haven't drank since 2000.  I would love to have a glass of wine at dinner or a drink when out with friends, but am afraid because of the past reaction.  I by no means was a drinker, but I love the taste of wine.  Just want to have maybe one drink.  What could cause this to happen, and is it an allergic reaction, or was it a panic attack.  By the way my heart checks out fine, so I know that isn't it, and I am not of Asian descent.

I also have an anxiety disorder. Whenever I drink alcohol I always end up feeling sick! And it does make me a bit sweaty. It kind of puts me in a panic attack. Because I felt crappy when I drank once I feel like I will always feel crappy when I drink. I started to think maybe I'm allergic to it as well, which is entirely possible. Have you tried talking to your doctor? Maybe using a chaser pill will help...I just wouldn't trust drinking and taking a xanax lol. Good luck! Hope this helps.

hi, i also suffer from anxiety attacks from an early age of 16, my attacks started when my three friends were killed in a crash.. after this the thought of death was always on my mind even to this day i always think the worst like now im suffering from really bad headache and im thinking its a brain tumor. I was also given xanax because my attacks were getting that bad my lips would turn blue and my hands would get all pins and needles.
after two years i went to see a "hipnotist"(excuse my spelling im ****) or a shrink who hipnotised me and i talked about all my problem that i have built up over the years.
I would recommend this as it has helped me so much .. plus when you come out of the hipnosis you cant remember what you have said so your not embarresed..
i went to three sessions and i felt i could stop going..
Still to this day i cant drink spirits, caffiene , nicotine only in moderation if i have a wield night i suffer for three days. I dnt drink caffiene at all.. coke also i only drink some coke and my panic attacks start again.

Im 21 now and i have learned to control my attacks to some degree..
try figure out brings them on and work on it..

like befor my panic attacks were if i was in a room full of people id have to leave..

now i cannot be alone or my mind wonders and thinks the worst ..

well just thought id write my story so you not alone

any questions just ask  x x
