schizoaffective with anxiety

by crepes68, Jan 06, 2008 01:54PM
My son is schizoaffective.  He takes eskalith and risperdal and has done well on these but the last few months have been hell.  When he goes out, which he doesn't want to do, he begins to gag and vomit if he can.  I assume he's having anxiety, something he never did before and even did it before seeing a dr. he's known for years.  I've had to cancel two dental appts. because of this.  The mental health ctr. he goes to won't give him ativan or xanax because they say they're controlled substances.  Is there anything else I can ask for.  Going crazy myself.

Psychiatrist are real willing to prescribe benzos to patients that have this diagnosis as they are apt to self medicate, If he is prescribing them consider yourself lucky but you must be over medicating your son or using them as well. Because when you call early for a refill each month you develop a pattern and a red flag goes up. Many times it is the pharmacy themselves that call the Dr. office and let them know that you have been consistently picking up refills early. Your son will have to be weened down from this medication as it is dangerous to abruptly stop, I would ask the Doctor to switch your son over to Klonopin which is much like Xanax but has a longer half life. Meaning the effects of the medication last longer than that of xanax which has a very short half life life, and is only effective for a few hours after you have been on it for a while. If he is detoxed off benzos than try an anti psychotic like seroquel or abilify. Or even consider a new doctor if he is behind the times. Your son deserves a Dr. that has the latest training in medication management.-------------NOAH
