started on xanax (generic). dosage question

Hey guy, Well after 2 weeks of generic Klonopin having no affect on me i got xanax (alprazolam)  in .5mg tablets.

I took 1 tablet last night and it did nothing at all.

This morning i took 2 pills  and it might have had maybe a 5%  out of 100% affect on me. not even sure if its just a placebo affect either. as i'm making this post its about an hour after i took them.

The generic is  g3720 Manufacturer: Greenstone Ltd., a Division of Pfizer.  From what little i could find its one of the better generics

My question is since generics can be so less potent should i try taking 4 of these pills to make my dose 2mg .   I'm not talking about doing this now maybe later tonite cause i MIGHT have a meeting tonite which i cant do it without medication, pretty sad.

Hey Kevin,

You're probably waiting for a certain someone else to respond but if he doesn't get to you, I can tell you from personal experience that taking 4 .5 mg of generic Xanax is probably not a good idea.  I have the exact same med from the same manufacturer.  I've only taken it 4 times in the last 5 months.  In my opinion, it's pretty potent.

Taking 4 pills at .5 mg, as you know, is equal to 2 mgs.  That is considered a pretty high dose.  Experiment with that dose if you have nothing else to do but sit around.  (Actually, in my opinion, you should never take that much Xanax.)  Since you have a meeting, I'm not sure it would be such a good idea.   Anyway, just my opinions.

I am only on .25 of the generic of xanax. I only take as needed which is probably 3-4 a month. I guess they work for me because I don't take them everyday. I don't think it would be a good idea to take more then the doctor prescribed because that is how the addiction starts. I would contact your doctor and see what they have to say.

thanks for the replies guys.  i dont plan on taking 2mg everyday or anything.

I'm just so distraught that no medication is having any affect and considering the generics can be alot less potent (in theory ) the 2mg of the generic might equal a lower amount  then taking 2mg of the real xanax.  

my doc is quite amazed at how nothing affects me. I fully understand that taking xanax daily is a big no no and have no intention of doing this. i'm just trying to find out the dose that will give me relief that i can try on occassions

i also heard letting the tablet dissolve in your mouth is more affective ( i did that with one pill which was pretty bitter and swallowed the other one whole).   i know this shouldnt be done with the time released xanax but i wasnt pescribed that stuff.

Do you guys think taking a small amount of water with them is better then taking a full glass of water?  and should they be taken on an empty stomach if it doesnt upset your stomach?

HI Kevin--I'm glad to hear you're not planning on taking xanax every day and like others above have stated, taking that much before a MEETING, well, I think you might end up nodding off.  Maybe since you have the konopin in your system, you are not feeling the xanax the way you might if your system was clear of other benzos?  Just a thought.  I've been keeping up with your posts and since the klonopin AND xanax are not working for you, what about valium?  I don't really have panic disorder, just anxiety/social anxiety.  Klonopin and valium are almost the same, I've read, except klonopin is used mainly for "panic".  I myself have been on xanax EVERY NIGHT for almost 15yrs.  What a mistake.  So that's why I'm looking into valium.  I'm sorry, but do you have panic or just anxiety?  I've read about you, but forget this fact.  Good luck in your meeting.  Btw, letting the tablet completely dissolve, OMG YUCK!!!!!!

P.S.  My manufacturer is Greens with  G 3721 on a seperate info label.  I have no idea if that is the same as Greenstone Ltd.  My number is 3721 not 3720.  Wonder what the difference is?.  In any case, this generic has worked fine for me.  One more thing, I take xanax for sleep, but they don't want to work at night for sleep.  Instead, I can take the smallest dose during the day and become very drowsy.  I sure wouldn't take more than 1mg before your meeting and do try on an empty stomach if you can tolerate.  That might help.

Just to let every know, I went out that night and took 3.5mg of generic xanax and it finally worked!  

I had alot riding on it as it coulda made me drowsy or not worked at all but it didnt make me seepy at all, just made me normal again.  

Does anyone out there take 3.5mg of xanax or higher once or twice a week?
