Ryan,

I would like to ask you a medical question since you know so much...My blood tests came back  the other day which shows that I have Thalesemmia minor (which I know my whole life) however my
LDH (not HDL..I know what that is) is 500 which is high...I know that it is higher for people with Thalessemia and I also have fibroids, however, is this REALLY high?  even for Thalessemia???  I am going to be making an appt. with my doctor, but just curious as to what you think...THANK YOU!

I am chinese and  I have Thalassemia.  My doc said that it is common amongst Asians.  I did read that you adopted a child from China and then you mentioned that you have Thal., so I thought you might be asian.

It only shows up in my blood tests every now and then.  It showed up in my most recent blood test last month.  My doc ran iron studies a few years ago but nothing remarkable showed up.  I can go to a hemotologist but it doesn't bother me so I haven't gone.   However, I do not know anything about LDH.  I'm sorry that you have this health issue lingering in your mind.

Wow, adoption is a huge step.  It takes an incredibly selfless person to do that.  I think it's extremely wonderful to give a child that has no home a home.  I have two kids of my own and that's about all I can handle at the moment.  They are very young, 3 and 1.  Maybe in the future adoption might be an option.

Well, good luck with everything.  I hope your health issue is resolved very quickly.  Have a nice long weekend.

Thank you Spade!  I will check that website you gave me...however, it is my LDH...not ldl or hdl......something different...but I will continue to look.  I appreciate you doing research for me...that is really nice of you and I am thankful....

Trying to do a little research for you.  Are you sure your LDL is 500 mg/dl?  Do you mean your trigylceride level is 500 mg/dl?  Here is a website with some typical ranges:

I think the fact your  thalassemia minor may/or may not have contributed to your high LDL levels is irrevelant and what is very important right now is that  your cholesterol levels are lowered.  No doubt your doctor will discuss this with you at your appointment.

Also, here is a good link which covers some dietary considerations for people with thalassemia minor that you may find useful.

Suzi-

you asked me to look at this question but, unfortunately, I can't answer this for you.  While I have a PhD, its not in the medical field.  My comments come from experience, and reading lots of literature.  I offer "opinions" and advice, when I feel comfortable,  with the hope it will help someone.
