trying to ween off xanax

I have been on 2mgs of Xanax for about 1 1/2 years and my Doctor just prescribed 20 mgs of Paxil to ween me off the Xanan. I heard so many horrible stories about Paxil that now I am afraid to began the prescribtion. The Xanax is working just fine, but my Doctor doesn't want me to get hooked. Well I got news for him, I am already hooked on Xanax; can't go below 1 /1/2 mgs per day without having awful panic attacks. Please advise. Should I start the 1 20mgs of Paxil at bedtime as prescribed? I hate to second guess my Doctor, but he always just shoos me out of his office; I understand; he is very busy.  I am also seeing a phychotherpist every week. HELP.

Here's an approach for you with your Doctor:

"Doctor, I have read several stories on the internet and they're very similar to my situation, when-ever I dramatically cut back on the Xanax i have anxiety attacks, and from what I've read, it may not even be related to the original anxiety, but maybe a withdrawal symptom from the Xanax, either way...I know that I can't go from 2.0 mg to ___mg's that quickly, please help me put together a tapering program."
