Anxiety can definitely cause that chest tightness feeling. Of course it's always a good idea to get checked out by your M.D. just to be safe as well as some reasurrance which may help reduce the anxiety. I don't condone meds but a good way to check to see if the chest tightness is anxiety related is to ask your Dr to RX a benzo like valium or xanax to see if this relieves your symptoms. You just have to be careful not to get addicted or abuse these type of medications.
I am no doctor or anything, but my understanding of your chest feeling tight is your bodies alarm to tell you that you are feeling anxious. What I am trying to say is that anxiety causes you to have a tight feeling in your chest. You never felt it before because you had never experienced a panic attack. Other possibilites could be that you have asthma but you didn't mention it in your post, so its most likely to be anxiety. To help you out, try relaxing and dont worry about your chest feeling tight. This is a circle, when you worry your chest feels tight, and your chest feeling tight makes you worry.
Take care!
