what is the max safe dosage of alprazolam per day

I have a prescript for both 1mg and 1/2mg alprazolam  I take two  1/2 s throughout the day at work, and can kind of feel that feeling coming on to where I am supposed to take1mg to sleepfor anxiety. But I usually take 1mg after work to calm down. and then another 1mg at nigh for sleep. Am I abusing, I am not following instructions on bottle, I just want to feel normal, and function,  There have been times that one 1mg has no affect on my insomnia so i'll either snap a 1mg in half, take it with my 1mg, or take  an additional 1/2 mg tab. Am I a Druggy. Because  I honestly I cannot function without these doses at least. Doctor says alprazolam is only short term solution, but we are talking  about 8 months now, so I don't know if I am dependant. I do notice some slurred speech.veryminor,at work, which worries me,any suggestions.

First thing first, "Am I abusing, I am not following instructions on bottle" I would say that if one is not following what is directed for them to take then the answer is yes. But it also depends if the person it either A.) over taking what is directed or B.) Is not taking all the medication within 24 hours as directed. However, we are NOT doctors, therefore we can not tell you a "safe" dosage to take. Talk to your doctor alone with the pharmacy about this issue. They are both trained in this area alone with other areas that will help you with this medication quest or even medical question(s) you may have for them.
