why is it so impossible to get help?

hello board,

it seems like everywhere i turn a door is closed in my face.  if someone wants help it's like oh well pay us all this money then we might help you.  i have applied time and time again for medical assistance i haven't had health insurance in 8 years. i'm single, not married, no kids.  i only make $16,000 and i keep getting rejected.  i can barely make rent, car payments etc.  i even skip eating just to pay bills.

i have anxiety so bad, today i went to this supposed "low income" clinic they tell me i have to pay $500 for an intake fee.  the other low cost place i went said it's a three month waiting list.  ridiculous.

i work and i get nothing for my hard work, meanwhile it seems like i have quite a few friends who are collecting welfare, disability and they have better healthcare than me.  i feel like it's almost more rewarded to just not work and bum around.  help!

The system can be frustrating.  You have to keep trying.  A good place to start is the phone book.  There should be a section called "human services", something like that, and there should be toll free hotlines you can call to seek out resources.

You can also start calling local doctors in your area.  Explain what your treatment need is, and your financial situation.  Some doctors are willing to set up affordable payment plans.  Even if you had to pay an initial fee, it would still be cheaper than the $500 you were quoted at the low income clinic.  An initial appt with a psychiatrist should typically run you $150-250, and again, many doctors are willing to work with you.  You need to just keep trying.  Is there anyone you know that you could ask for some financial help?  It's not like you're asking for money to go shopping, you're trying to seek out professional help.

When you are calling local docs, you can also ask THEM for resources.  They would have numbers and agencies available.  Just ask for the information.

Did you put yourself on the 3 month waiting list?  I know that seems like a lifetime, but it's a starting point.  Even people with the best insurance plans often have to wait a month or more for an appointment with a psychiatrist.  That's normal.  If you didn't get on the list, do that immediately.  At least you know you will eventually be seen there while you continue to seek out other options.

Best of luck...keep us updated!
