xanax as needed

I've been on 10mg of Prozac for a little less then a month. Think it's kicking in but still have my anxious moments so my doctor just prescribed .5mg of xanax to take as needed. I plan to take them only when absolutely necessary but I'm afraid of withdrwal symptoms. I'm also afraid of getting addicted. Can someone please enlighten me with what to expect? Any advise or suggestions?

Taking them only when absolutely necessary is the way to go. That's exactly what they were intended for. So long as you take them only on an as-needed and infrequent basis (2 -3 times per week or less), there is no risk of physical dependence or withdrawal.

Personally, I would avoid taking them for two or three consecutive days in a row, as the rebound anxiety/panic can be nasty once the Xanax wears off. Aside from that matter, I am unaware of any other issues.
