Cimetidine for pseudogout

Cimetidine for pseudogout

I have a good friend who has pseudogout as a result of hemochromatosis. He has been on colchicine for a year or so with limited benefits. He had been misdiagnosed for year, so his joint problems have been becoming debilitated.

I was doing some research for him online, and found a reference to cimetidine (Tagamet) benefiting someone with chronic calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder. I suggested it might help, so three weeks ago he started taking 200 mg. twice a day.

The results have been stunning. His pain is greatly reduced, swelling is down in his joints, and he is resuming physical activity that he hasn't enjoyed in years. He says his feet, which are misshapen from the joint swelling are returning to their old shape. The grinding feeling in his joints is gone.

So I have felt compelled to post this on some pseudogout forums to see if this can help anyone else.

IMPORTANT – Cimetidine can increase the toxicity of colchicine, which is a treatment for pseudogout. So make sure you talk to your doctor if you are taking colchicine.

Please let me know if this has helped you. Email me at ***@****

Very interesting post.  Thank you for mentioning that any one considering this should talk to their doctor.  From what I read online, tagamet could intensify side effects if taken with certain drugs used to treat this condition so talking to the doc first is important.  Thanks for sharing.
