Hip Pain

Hello! I will 74 yrs old in two months. I have been having hip pain off and on for a year or more. I accepted the fact that our joints are losing the bursa or whatever it is that allows us to move without too much trouble. Now, I seem to have reached a point where the pain arises even without movement. I wish to avoid surgery if at all possible. Is it inevitable? Thank you
