Low Back Pain

by Sarit, Oct 28, 2009 01:24PM
I am 64.

When I get up in the morning, generally there is no pain. But within 5-10 minutes, I gradually start feeling the pain....and it increases.  But the pain again gradually subsides within about one hour.

It is not a serious thing. But, is this an indication of something serious coming?

Any suggestion and/or advice?

You are off to a good start by noting when and how the pain progresses.  There are a lot of possible causes from muscular to skeletal, from short term to long term.  How long has this been going on?  Are you better some days than others?  Have you tried sleeping with a pillow under or between your knees?  How good is your mattress?  What helps the pain subside?  Have you ever had back pain before?

Oh!
Your questions remind me of magicians!

Here are answers to your questions:-

1. Yes. I am absolutely O.K. on some days.
2. This phenomenon I am noticing for the last 7-8 months.
3. I generally sleep with pillows between my knees.
4. Mattress is so so. But, not spongy.
5. Slight cautious movement for the first 15-20 minutes gradually makes the pain subside.
6. About 5-6 years back, I had severe back pain, making me completely bed-ridden. Some pain killers were given and, thereafter I was asked to do some exercise : lying down on chest - raising the upper body like a snake - and keeping the body in that posture for 5-6 second - repeated 5-6 times. This exercise, however, I am not doing now any more. SHOULD I CONTINUE THAT EXERCISE?

Regards,

LOL, no magician at work here.  :)  If you can get in to see a doc, I think you should just to be sure that the exercises you were doing before will not hurt your current condition.  My hunch is that the exercises will help, but never start without a doc evaluation.  You may also want to invest in a mattress topper.  I got an amazing one from overstock - 2" memory foam - and it completely changed my life.  Please let us know what you find out and how things work out for ya.
