Methotrexate for RA

Methotrexate for RA

Hi my husband of 42 has had RA since he was 21, he has tried benyrol and lodine and also gold injections which didnt help he said the best pain relief was Ibuprofen but he was having to take 1200mg every 4 hours to help the pain. Now last year they have put him on Methotrexate starting at 10mg per week and uping to 20mg per week now and they are not doing anything. How long does Metho take to work and should'nt he be seeing some improvement now. He has RA in nearly every joint, but his ankles, knees and elbows are the worst.

It sounds like your husband is in a lot of pain.  I know what that is like.  It took a year from diagnosis to getting my therapy correct to get relief.
Is he taking the MTX pills or injections?  I think the injections work better (and are easier on your liver) but it still takes 6-8 weeks to get it into your system and see results.  It also takes time to get the dosage right.  Are they combining the MTX with other medications?  That is frequently a best approach.
