Peripheral Neuropalthy? caused by virus

My husband seemed to pick up a bug (cold etc) and it took a lot out of him. Always a energetic and very active person all of a sudden became very tired and his left hand became numb, painful, fingers on fire and quickly spread to his right hand and fingers. It is now approx 2 months and no relief, he is awaiting test for neuropathy test? and diagonsed with osteoarthritis and suggested that carpal tunnel surgery to relief pressure??

I believe it has something to do with the virus that he picked up? Any suggestions?
