Plaquanil

I have leukocytoplastic vasculitis and Sjorgens Syndrome and nonspecific joint discomfort.  I take 7.5mg of Prednisone which doesn't keep the vasculitis under very good control. I also have high pressure, not not Glaucoma, and have had implants for cataracts both eyes.  I have possible esophagitis and certainly, reflux.  Have an EGD scheduled for future.

My rheumatologist ordered Plaquenil along with the Prednisone which I am dropping to 5mg daily.  I read the side effects of Plaquenil and panicked.  I take Zantac, Lantus insulin, Glipizide, Premarin, Provera, Synthroid, Acyclovir 800 qd, Calcium, Centrum, and Spiriva Inhaler plus Tums Xtra, and Maalox Max for symptomatic relief of acid reflux pain.

My glaucoma doctor says a retinal doc should follow me if I start the Plaquenil, which is OK.  I am worried about vision changes and permanent side effects.  My rheum has not ordered blood tests although I was in the hosp recently for anaphylactic shock and he might be using those tests.

Is Plaquenil safe.

As with any drug, there will be side effects.  If you are closely monitored by your physician, Plaquenil can be a useful medication in treating rheumatological diseases.  Given the other choices of medication, Plaquenil is among the safer medications.

GI side effects are the most common, including vomiting, diarrhea and nausea.  Rash can occur in 10 percent of patients.

Serious eye disease is rare if the patient is appropriately monitored.  An inability to focus and retinopathy are the more serious side-effects.  In general, eye effects occur in 3-4 percent of patients taking Plaquenil.  Again, these side effects are rare if you are monitored appropriately.

You may want to ensure all your questions are answered prior to starting this medication.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
