RA Treatments

I have RA and the Rhemulogist wants to start Remicade Treatments and I'm scared of the side effects.  The pain everyday is getting worse in my right hand and I'm sick of being in pain everyday.  Can someone tell me about the treatments and what I can expect?  Is it worth the risk?  Or if you have anyother suggestions that could help me with the pain that would be helpful too I would appreciate it.  I sew for a living and I'm trying to start a Sanctuary for Senior Animals and have alot of typing to do too!  Thank You and God Bles

Hi there!  I've had RA since age 5 and am now 50. I'm not on Remicade, but I am on methotrexate and one of Remicade's "cousins", Enbrel. Trust me, I know how scary it is to read all the possible side effects that come with these medications. However, keep in mind that even if they test a drug on a million people and one person has an issue that may or may be due to that particular drug, they have to report it as a possibility.

Speaking from my own experience, it is absolutely worth the risk, especially if the alternative is permanent disability. Remicade will slow down or, if you're lucky, halt the disease progression and allow you to live a more normal life and carry on activities that are important to you. I'm a writer so typing is my life!

The good news is, that with many of these medications, you're closely monitored and as soon as anything looks suspicious, you can stop with few or no ill effects.

From what I've heard from friends who are taking Remicade treatments, some of them take a Benadryl or are given some kind of antihistamine before the infusion to reduce the chance of allergic reaction. So ask your doc about this. Another bit of good news is that many side effects fade over time, so if you start out feeling fatigued after the treatment, for example, hang in there and wait to see if it resolves.

I know it's scary, and it's okay to be scared. It's not okay to let fear keep you from a treatment that might improve your life. You won't know until you try. It may help to write down a list of questions and concerns and take it with you on your next appointment. And take a friend with you who can take notes while you listen to your doctor's answers.

Hugs,
Carolan
