RA abd Mid Back Pain

I have had RA for about 15 yeas now.  But recently I have developed some pain in my mid back, more on the left side.  The pain doens't really interfear with daily activities but is worse when I lay down.  I am trying to decide if I should see the rhematologist  or my regualr doctor about this pain.  I am not sure if it is RA related.  I have had this for a couple of months.  Any suggestions as to which physician to se and what might be causing this pain.  Thanks

It certainly may be related to the RA, but many other causes can lead to back pain as well.  Musculoskeletal causes like a herniated disk or muscle strain can lead to the symptoms.

Obtaining imaging of the back with plain films and/or an MRI should be considered for further evaluation.

If the pain continues, treatment can be aimed at the underlying cause (perhaps found with the imaging studies).  Further consultation can be done with an orthopedist or physiatrist.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
