Splotchy-looking, sensitive palms and fingers

Hello:

I recently came across a posting in this forum that fits EXACTLY my symptoms.  Here is that post:

"About 3 mos ago notice my hands hurt more when carrying briefcase, groceries and chopping food. Hands would be left with a red line whenever pressure was applied. Skin on hands actually doesn't feel as resilient as it used to be. Also, the skin is very touch sensitive, it hurts to crumble up a piece of paper and push on the end of a paperclip. Both leave dents in my skin. If my hands are down below my heart they take on a red reticulated look. If I hold them above my head they go back to the normal white color. Sometimes my fingers will tingle and throb when I've been using them alot."

Now, I didn't notice this until I worked hard moving furniture back in March and discovered a bout with hand dermatitis a few weeks after.  Perhaps I just have naturally 'reticulated' hands!  But it's accompanied by some wrist and hand ache as well.  Had a CBC done recently and all was normal.  Am now seeing a chiropractor for some upper spine and thoracic area problems that could be causing some of the numbness and aching.

I guess my quesion is, is the skin sensitivity and splotchiness that disappears when holding the hands up and reappears with hands at the side a sign of anything significant?  Blood vessel problem?  Perhaps even hand strain from three months ago (never noticed this before)?  Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Thanks much!

Tough to say without examination.  One consideration would be a vascular condition known as subclavian steal syndrome, which may cause the symptoms you describe.  The movement of the arms can cause some of the neighboring blood vessels to "steal" the blood supply, causing the described circulation problems.

You can consider an ultrasound or CT scan of the area to further evaluate this condition.

A referral to a vascular surgeon can also be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
