Stopping Allopurinol after 30+ years with no attacks

Question: Continued use of Allopurinol

Facts: A long time ago, when I was 17 (in 1977 or so), I took a swine flu shot. Within a week, I was in the hospital with jaundice and excruciatingly painful swelling of the ankles. First diagnosis was some kind of hepatitis. Then, it was diagnosed as two things: Gout and Gilberts Disease (high bilirubin). I believe that the swine flu shot had triggered an early appearance of these.

After one major attack, and a short treatment of colchicine, I was put on allopurinol, and I've been on it for 30 years.

I have never had another attack, but whenever I mention maybe stopping it, I'm told of the possibility of getting crystals inside organs, something I'm not keen to have (it was bad enough in the joints).

Well, medicine has advanced by 30 years. I wonder if I really should keep taking this medicine. So that I can properly ask my (next) doctor, can anyone suggest what the criteria are for stopping allopurinol? I was originally told that it was fairly benign, but now I am told it is not so.

Thanks.
