TKR or Fusion...or what?

I am a 30 year old female with severe arthiritis in my right knee. I have been dealing with this situation for over 10 years now. At this point, I have about 40 degrees of movement in my knee and no cartilage left. Was temporarily diagnosed with Pigmented Villanodular Synovitits, though this was not validated with Pathology reports from my first two surgeries, so we are working with Arthiritis as my diagnosis. One doctor has recommended a Fusion, to which I am opposed, and another has briefly discussed a TKR with me But is reluctant to do it because of my age. I have severe pain, lack of movement and my daily activites are very limited.
I would like to hear from those who have had either procedure (or other procedures). What was your situation, procedure, recovery, etc. like?
From a doctor: What would you recommend? (i know you are working on limited information and have not examined me, no liability) :)

Hello,  have you investigated stem cell replacement?  check out the Regenexx website for info.  I live in Australia and am getting things sorted out to go and get treatment in Feb next year.  They are probably the most advanced clinic around and do a lot of research.  They are realistic about prognosis and don't say they can help everyone, however they have a pretty good strike rate, even with really bad cases like yours.  Read the blog from patients who don't hold back about describing in detail the results, even when its not great....  They draw your own stem cells from your bone marrow and also from fat cells and have 3 types of procedures you can get.  Its worth trying out in my opinion as its better than a TKR.  Having already had 4 hip replacements I am not keen on getting any more pieces of metal put in to me any time soon.  As its not covered by insurance I have really done a lot of research over the past 2 years so I am not making a hasty decision with this, plus its given me time to save up for it.  I reiterate - read their blog site for testimonials along with the extensive info they have about it all on their website - just google regenexx colarado.  Good luck and I hope this helps...

Hi there!

If the knee is severely damaged and procedures such as fusion and TRK have been recommended, I would recommend a TKR over a fusion. Usually a TKR may last anything between 15-20 years and may require replacement; however this would ensure adequate mobility and a symptom free life. I would suggest discussing the pros and cons in detail with your treating doctor.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
