What is a "Flare Up"

Recently my arthritis pain has become what I think is called a "flare up."  I have been managing very well for quite a time.  Lately I have been doing a great deal of walking, which I thought was good for arthritis mobility, but the pain has become intense.  I have not to my knowledge done anything different.

Could too much walking at my age ( I am 73) be the cause of the back pain.  I would hate to give up my walking.  How can I help myself, and ease this really intense pain in my back?

Hi,
I understand your concern regarding this. A flare-up occurs when the disease is more active and during this time there is increased morning stiffness, more pain and swelling in the joints, involvement of new joints, and increased tiredness and fatigue. Flare-ups can occur after eating a specific food such as milk, shrimp, wheat products, and certain meats. Medications, rest, exercise,  maintaining proper body weight and eating a well-balanced diet, heat and cold therapies and even surgery to repair or remove a diseased or damaged joint may help. If the pain persists, you may need to have this checked by your doctor for proper management.Take care and do keep us posted.
