midde back pain

For the past 8 years I've had middle back pain...mainly in the evening. It feels muscular and is a burning feeling that comes in waves on both side of my spine. When I take a deep breath it hurts like I have swallowed fire. I have been to the doctor but nobody knows what it is. I thought forever that maybe it was a food allergy to gluten, beer, carbonation. I always feel gassy or like I have to burp when it's inflammed. I have thought maybe it's displaced heartburn...but it's strange cause I feel it in my back. Mostly after eating dinner. The only way I can describe the pain is burning gas in my back.

Anybody have similar symptoms? My mother seems to think its stress but I don't see the link. I am a 34 year old female. 5'9" 150lbs.

Hi, I too have this, pain/ach on both sides, at the waist( and prob 3" above and below also). It only starts after I lay down at night or when i wake up about 3-4  AM. Befor that tho, I usually get in the recliner by 11 PM to try and get some sleep as am already uncomfortable.  Can't lay on back or sides for vy long at one time.
I have had back problems  ( scolilosis, later ruptured L4 disk and surgery ) but neither of these has resulted in this type of problem. In fact it has only started in the last 3 mos. Have had urinalysis and Cystocopic Bladder exam, showing nothing wrong. Also saw a Gastroenterologist thinking it might be a result of IBS. He put me on Bentyl which i can take  up to 4 x a day  but I have only occasional Gas during the day and little or no aching .  At times, I have a burning sensation in my abdomen and stomach which could, I suppose be Gerd, something I've had before but again this is inconsistant.

I eat a pretty bland diet and am Diabetic so watch what I eat perhaps more so that others would.
Recently started Physical Therapy for a Shoulder problem and have a series of exercises I do at home but those are for the upper back/arms.  I also use some exercise equiptment at the gym but all under supervision.
Even tho I am not in severe pain, it is enough to interfere with my sleep.
Since i am 72 yrs. am wondering if it could be my spine is the problem, as I do have diffuse Osteoporosis but no one has suggested that.
I've not had x-ray or the like recently .
Would like to hear from anyone with an answer or even a suggested one from the DR.
                                                                        Thanks,
                                                                                 PJ

I get that same sensation from time to time. For me, it's when I'm stressed, or when my OA is acting up. I have it in my low back, and when it flares, I move differently and it puts strain on my mid and upper back. It sounds almost like muscle spasms but it could very well be from gas or indigestion though too, depending on where in your digestive tract it is. Have you tried an anti-gas medication when it happens? I've found OTC Gas-X to be very helpful. I also have a hiatal hernia that causes gas/air to get trapped. That can be very painful, and I also feel that in my back.
My suggestion would be to try an anti-gas when it happens and if that helps, discuss it with your doctor. He may then refer you to a gastroenterologist.
Some of us are ultra sensitive to sensations in the body and you'd be amazed at how we feel things!
Please let us know what happens!
