special socks

My mother has suffered with rheumatoid arthritis for all my life, I am 36 years old, and never once has she asked me for anything for Christmas...until now, she asked me to look for "some kind of comfy socks" Because of her hand pain and foot and ankle swelling she has my father either put on and take off her socks for her, he has even gone as far as cutting the sides of some of her socks so she can do it herself.  does anyone know of any special kind of sock that would not be constricting as well as easy for her to put on and take off herself?  I've looked over a few web sites and the only thing I can find so far is not what I am looking for.  Please help if anyone knows of a website to visit or even my local department store I may locate the best solution for her problem, it would be much appreciated.  Also if there is such an item, what is it called?

I've seen socks that can help with the pain and inflammation but not for ease of putting on.  There are devices out there to help and if you got nice soft cotton socks with that it might do the trick.  I searched on 'devices to help arthritic people put on socks' and got a variety of items.  Here is one http://osteoarthritis.about.com/od/livingcoping/f/sock_aid.htm.
