thumb pain after injury

thumb pain after injury

I injured my right thumb as I endeavored to catch my balance when missing a step.  It hit hard on the woodwork with gave me instant pain  ~ Now 5 weeks later the pain and swelling continues.  I had it x-rayed - which shows no break, but some arthritis.  No doubt there may be some arthritis, but it seems like something else is going on as well. It is very painful to the touch and or any kind of pressure.. but only just the tip and to the first joint.  It is somewhat difficult to write and constantly painful to use.  I applied a splint for the first three weeks, but after the xray  I was told to remove it, and make sure I use my thumb... it is actually getting worse instead of better.

What should I be doing next ?               P-

can you straighten the thumb completely?  if not, the extensor tendons could have broken loose.  if so you should see a hand surgeon

5 weeks of pain after a contusion, showing arthritis isn't unusual.  why do you suspect something more than arthritis?  because of the degree of pain?  arthritis can be very painful.
