Fractured ankle in 3 places-recovery

Hi,

My father has broken his ankle very severely due to a fall and will have surgery today. From what I understand he will need special screws and such to fix it. We've been told that he can start trying to walk again after about 6 weeks but it will may take a long time before he's fully recovered. I understand that you cannot give me any sure answers due to the limited information I've given, but if you could give your thoughts on how it generally goes for people his age I'd appriciate it and it may comfort us. he is 59 years and pretty healthy, all he does is walk, no sports or anything. I just pray that he can eventually recover completely from this and enjoy life with no limitations from this injury.

Thanks for your help,
Jack

Thanks for using the forum.

Using the information you provided, I think that it is likely your father can make a full recovery. He is going to need physical therapy, and has a long road ahead in the next few months. However, if he puts in the work required, he will most likely regain his mobility. He will experience some weakness in the leg after not putting weight on it for an extended period of time. He will also experience some stiffness and loss of mobility in in ankle. These issues will be addressed in the physical therapy. He will most likely also be given exercises to do at home to rebuild the strength and mobility of his leg and ankle.

I hope he has a speedy recovery!
