IV blood backflow

Is there any way at all that blood can backflow in IV tubing all the way into the saline IV back even when bag is lying lower than where the IV is in arm?

If an IV is running, then the valve is open.  As far as how long it takes for the IV bag to empty depends on what rate the IV is running at.  The physician will prescribe an IV rate (ie 75cc/hr) and the IV will run at that rate.  IV's are regulated by either an IV pump, or via a roller clamp on the IV tubing.

Don't most hospitals have a valve to prevent that? Also, how long does it take for an IV bag (in minutes) to totally empty?

Hi and thanks for using the forum.

If the IV bag is laying lower than the IV in the persons arm, blood will back up the tubing and can potentially get into the IV bag.  When the IV bag is hung up on an IV pole, the bag is higher than the IV in the patients arm and the saline from the bag runs down into the patients arm.   Hope this answers your question.
