Knee Laceration

Knee Laceration

I was in a moped accident about 3 weeks ago today.  I went to the clinic and had it cleaned and stitched, 3 sutures.  I went back every day to have the wound cleaned and recovered.  They put iodine on the wound every time I go back to the clinic.  Is this a good thing?  The laceration, which was initially just about bone deep, is healing, but quite slowly.  I have stopped going to the clinic and now use only hydrogen peroxide and ointment.  Some people here think i should dry the wound out and let a scab form.  The wound is about level with the surrounding skin, but is still about the size of a quarter. I have an A/C room and access to all medical supplies.  Please give me any/all healing suggestions.  I appreciate your response.

Hi and thanks for using the forum.

It sounds like you have been doing a good job so far.  I agree that there really is not a need for continued use of iodine.  Cleaning the wound with soap and water while you are in the shower and using an ointment such as bacitracin is the right thing to do.  When out and about, I would cover the wound with a bandaid to keep it clean.  If you notice any signs or symptoms of infection (redness at site, pus or drainage from the site, skin hot to touch, puffiness at the site, etc.) go back to the clinic as you could need an antibiotic.  Otherwise, I think you are doing fine and should heal just fine.  Good luck.
