why do newborn babies get hiccups?

HI and thanks for using the forum.

Hiccups are very common in newborns and in fact, many babies hiccup in-utero.  Hiccups occur when the diaphragm contracts forcefully.  It is believed hiccups occur more frequently in newborns because of the immaturity of the diaphragm.  The good news is, babies rarely seem distressed by hiccups.  It usually bothers parents more.  IF you have concerns about your baby or if you feel that hiccups are interfering with feedings, talk to your pediatrician.  Good luck.
