Depo-Provera is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. Pregnancy occurring during the use of the shot is usually an undetected pregnancy before the shot is given. One of the side effects of Depo-Provera is irregular menstrual bleeding. 50% of women will stop getting their period after 1 year of the shot. The period usually returns after stopping the shots, however, it can take 3 months to a year for the effects of Depo-Provera to wear off and fertility to return.
