right side chest

I am in the army and ive been going to the doctors and they tell me nothing is wrong with me.

When I run not even a mile, the right side upper part of my chest feel like a cramp, it comes on slowly and doesn't stop until i stop running for 20+ mins. the only way i can describe it is; a heaviness, feel like i cant get any air into my right lung at first, if i keep running it feels like im gonna die, a real tightness in my chest, and dizziness.

Please help
THANK YOU

Hi, thank you for using this forum.  I will do my best to answer your question with the information you have provided me.

You have not given me a lot of details about your symptoms.  For example, I am unsure if you have previously been able to run without any symptoms and now you cannot, or if you have never been a runner and these symptoms occur now that you have started.

If you previously have been able to run long distances, are in good physical shape and these symptoms have suddenlty started, then you need to be evaluated by a doctor.  There are lots of possible causes for these symptoms and you would need a physical exam and some tests such as a chest x-ray, to figure this out.

If you are a novice runner and you find that these symptoms are occuring now that you have started running, the cause could simply be that you are not used to running distances.  The simple solution to this would be to start with shorter distances and add to your runs each week so that your body can work up to it.  If you find that you cannot even do shorter distances without having these symptoms, you should be evaluated by a doctor (maybe exercise induced asthma?).

I hope this helps a little.  Good Luck to you.

Bridget

PS- This probably goes without saying, but if you are a smoker, this can seriously affect your ability to run any sort of distance and could be the culprit.

Hi,

Please don't count me as a second opinion.  I don't have the training or credentials to give you a diagnosis even if I did have access to your previous test results.  My role would be to point you in the right direction- which I think is to get a second opinion if you continue to have these symptoms.  I hope you can find some answers!

I'm stumped!  It doesn't seem normal that 9 months ago you were running 4-6 miles and now you can barely make it through 1.  I am not sure what ruck runs are, but it seems strange that you can do those without problem.  Is it possible for you to get a second opinion?  Sorry I am not more helpful.  Good Luck.

I used to be a good runner, i ran track in highschool and went through the fire academy before enlisting, I am in good physical shape, I can perform ruck runs because i think the straps keep pressure on my chest. I have never been diaognosed with anything, they have performed CT scans, chest x-rays, pulmonary test and still nothing has come up, It started 9 months ago in basic training I had pnemonia and was still running 4-6 miles in the cold of FT. lenordwood, mi
