2 1/2 year old son's yeast infection

My son has a yeast infection and was prescribed Nystatin cream to be applied at every diaper change.  He has had the rash for a little over a week and I was just putting baby powder on it before the med was prescribed.  Been doing what the dr said for 2 days and it seems as though the rash is spreading and getting worse.  Also, his discomfort level seems to be getting a lot worse.

Does the Nystatin cream help with the itching/pain of the rash? Is there anything I can use IN ADDITION to the Nystatin that will help with the pain/itching?

Also, I have seen some posts that say that some children are prescribed an ORAL form of Nystatin and was wondering what the difference is and if there was a reason my dr prescribed the cream instead? I was instructed to keep it dry, but applying the cream at every diaper change seems to be making it impossible to do that and I wonder if that has anything to do with it worsening.  It was a lot dryer when I was just using baby powder.

What do you think?????

Nystatin cream is commonly applied for yeast infection diaper rashes. Some doctors recommend oral antifungal medications in addition to topical creams since the yeast can be found in the intestine. No study has definitively answered the question whether oral antifungal medications are helpful.

Some steps you can try to help now:
Wash with water  and blot dry, don't wipe the sore areas.

To keep the rash dry, lay your baby on his stomach and leave the diaper off for a while, with no diaper cream on. Do this as often as you can. Drying out the rash helps healing.

Apply a diaper cream such as Desition or A+D.
