Can I take an SNRI drug is I can't tolerate SSRI drugs?

by MariaLeigh, Jul 01, 2009 08:07AM
I cannot tolerate SSRI drugs. I took Zoloft for many years and suddenly began having horrific night sweats, headache, confusion, etc. The doc switched me to another SSRI and I had the same problem. I was switched to Wellbutrin a year ago, and have none of those symptoms; however, the depression isn't under control as well. In times of stress I now become anxious to the point of panic attacks and it takes longer for me to feel normal again. Those times are few and far between, thank goodness, but they aren't pleasant when they happen.

I was wondering if you thought I might be able to tolerate an SNRI drug such as Effexor, or does my issue with the SSRI drugs make me a poor candidate for this drug?

SNRI's inhibit the reuptake of norepinephrine as well as serotonin. You may be able to tolerate these types of drugs, unfortunately, the only way to know is by trying them. Please discuss this with your physician as well.
