Keppra vs. levetiracetam

Keppra vs. levetiracetam

I was diagnosed with epilepsy after a head injury 10 years ago. I have grand mal seizures generally correlating with my period. The only medicine that has been effective is 500 mg of Keppra twice a day. I switched to the generic,  Levetiracetam, after my insurance decided to only pay half the price of Brand name prescriptions. The  Levetiracetam was pretty much ineffective and I started having seizures again. I switched back to Keppra and the seizures stopped. So I guess my question is, I thought the generic was supposed to be the same as the Brand name. Why didn't it work?

Very occasionally there is a slight bio-availability difference between brands, but Keppra is not one of the medications we are usually concerned about. From your history it seems definite that the change of brand did cause your seizures to start again. This should be reported to whoever controls drug manufacture in your country/state (TGA in australia)
