Sertraline dosage and Alprazolam use

by Marks470, Jul 03, 2009 10:36AM
Thanks for your help.  I had my first experience with a panic attack and subsequent deep depression on April 1, 2009.  I went to the doctor and he started me on meds.  I've been on Sertraline for five weeks and have had no significant improvement in depression or anxiety.  My doctor tried Lexapro first for six weeks and I seem to get worse.  He just increased my dose from 100mg to150mg of sertraline four days ago (June 30).  I feel really strange.  Should I be experiencing any new or different side effects from the increased dose?  If so, what might they be?

Also, I am affraid of Xanax.  I do not want to be addicted to anything.  I'm not an addictive person, I don't even drink.  I try not to use alprazolam, but, my anxiety gets worse as I reduce.  I've been taking 0.25mg to 1mg per day with the most in the beginning of 2 mg per day two months ago.  My questions are: Should I be affraid of alprazolam? Sometimes it seems like it makes my depression worse.  Is this possible?  Is there a better drug for anxiety that is less addictive?  I've heard Klonopin may be better.

Thanks again for your help

Side effects that may occur while taking sertraline include anxiety; constipation; decreased sexual desire or ability; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; increased sweating; loss of appetite; nausea; nervousness; stomach upset; tiredness; trouble sleeping; vomiting; or weight loss. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor.  CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience bizarre behavior; black or bloody stools; chest pain; decreased bladder control; exaggerated reflexes; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever; hallucinations; loss of coordination; new or worsening agitation, panic attacks, aggressiveness, impulsiveness, irritability, hostility, exaggerated feeling of well-being, restlessness, or inability to sit still; persistent or severe ringing in the ears; persistent, painful erection; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe or persistent anxiety or trouble sleeping; stomach pain; suicidal thoughts or attempts; tremor; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual or severe mental or mood changes; vision changes; or worsening of depression.

Klonopin is in the same class of drugs as Xanax.  Another drug that is indicated for anxiety and does not cause physical dependence is Buspar. Perhaps, you can discuss this option with your doctor.
