medication side effect

Recently, my new GP suggested MIRTAZAPINE for sleep . . . .instead of Ambien.
I have tried it twice. . . .it puts me to sleep alright, but for days!  I feel like a Zombie.

What is in this medication that causes this excessive sleep mode.
It actually has a positive effect, in that
I certainly don't need the Xanax much but makes me feel like a psyche patient with
no affect, and unrelenting sleepiness. It changes who I really am.

I don't take it anymore. .  .but is there anything else that is similar, calms one down,
but allows a person to wake up normally?  I have had insomnia since I was 12. . .and
I'm 63.

Mirtazapine is an antidepressant that also has anti-anxiety properties. Drowsiness/dizziness are the most common side effects to the medication. There are several medications available for insomnia, some of the newer ones include Rozerem and Lunesta. You can discuss these options with your physician.
