Adult with Asperger's

My boyfriend's son was diagnosed with Asperger's just recently.  After doing some research on it, I'm wondering if my boyfriend has it as well.  I know that it is not always genetic but now that I've been reading more about it, I see some similarities.  He does not always make eye contact when I speak to him.  He gets so annoyed and irritated when something is touching his skin like my hair...but especially when a piece of my hair touches his face.  Sometimes when I am so sad and I think that anyone can see the emotion and pain on my face, he does not.  I used to feel like it was uncaring but now I'm wondering if he is an adult with Asperger's.  He is very unorganized and messy.  I don't mind cleaning up after him but if I do not clean up after him, his apartment would be unhealthy to live in.  He is very good with numbers.  I love him very much.  We've been together for 3 years and it is only recently that I think I've been really understanding why he does the things he does.  Does this sound like Asperger's to anyone.

Hi,

Often when someone has Asperger's in the family, someone else also shows signs. I haven't heard of an Aspie who is unorganized - doesn't mean there aren't some. Does he get upset about daily stuff? Is he stressed out after meeting lots of people? Is it just hair he doesn't like against his skin or has he got a problem with being touched in general? Does he get angry and frustrated a lot and often believes things should be different? Does he have lots of rules... Could you tell us a bit more about him to give us a clearer picture, please?
Take care,
Kasi

It is possible to see similarities in families.  As far as being messy...it can go to one extreme or to the other.  My daughter was messy beyond belief.  With her insect perseveration, she would have dead bugs all over her room with her clothes, kleenexes, lotions, papers, books, and ?, ?, ?......  There was a pathway from chair to computer to bed.

I spent 10 hrs. plus several times over her childhood straightening out her room.  I finally had to accept this was her.  I am ultra neat but not white glove.  I have lots of things, but keep it clean, dusted and together.  So I know she didn't take after me...lol.

What you described is a tiny glimpse into his life.  Does he get overwhelmed by what goes on around him like sounds, people, demands on his time?  Does he like to be alone or does he have an interest in something that he will focus on to the exclusion of other things?  Kasi asked some good questions also.

I don't know if you have googled Aspergers or Autism (High functioning, etc.), but there is a wealth of info. out there and resources/suggestions how to go about getting an evaluation done if it is a concern.  Tony Atwood wrote some excellent material on Aspergers that you may find helpful.  You can google him if you want.

Has your boyfriend expressed concern that he may be on the Autism Spectrum?
