Does my son have asperger?

Does my son have asperger?

Hi ,

I have 2 boys, age 5, and 7.

My 7 year old was suspected of Asperger when he was 3. He was diagnosed to be OK at 4. But as he grew older, more and more of the symptons become more apparent.

Let me try to list what I have observed

(1) Very specialised interests - he knows everything abt world war 2, reads tons of history books. He is crazy abt facts. He knows all the dates. He dislikes reading fiction. He makes up a "Question of the Day" for his class and noone is interested. Noone likes to "share" his show and tell because they are too "intellectual".

(2) Very high IQ. He is technically a 1st grader, but has finished grade 4 maths. He is reading at at least a 3rd grade level. He is very good and his violin and piano too.

(3) Cannot read social cues. He can't detect changes in voice tone, body language and facial cues. He is stubbed by friends and labelled weird, and he doesn't even detect it.

(4) Awkward motor skills. Trips over frequently, clumsy. Cant seem to co-ordinate gross motor.

(5) He ignores when people calls him. His teacher says he needs to learn some manners.

(6) Highly creative and vivid imagination.

Is it possible that he has Asperger that somehow escaped detection at 4 years old?

Finally, I am in San Antonio. Is there any  way I can get him diagnosed? This is more for the school, so that the teachers can be more accomodating.

Thank you.

It does sound like Aspergers.  (many autistic/aspergers children can appear deaf until their name is said a number of times to draw their attention).
Sometimes children with Aspergers do so well academically that their difficulties with social interaction and communication get overlooked.  Many times it is not diagnosed until the child is older because that is when some of the other charteristics, such as interests/obsessions become more obvious.
My understanding (and I am from the UK) is that you can approach either Health (your paediatrician) or Education (your school) for an evaluation.  Maybe someone from the US will give you further details of how to go about it.
