Does this sound right?

My son (aged 5) was referred to a nurologist due to low tone and difficulty tracking and sensitivity to sound.  I remarked to the Dr. that my biggest concern was his attention issues.  Everyone has been surprised how smart he is.  The ADHD tests came back with mild ADHD but also he tests one to two years above average in every academic criteria.  The Dr. had me take a GADS survey at that time also.  He tells me at the appointment that my son has mild ADHD and some symptoms of aspergers.  He sent a letter to the school stating my son has aspergers.

My son is a very social child who is well liked by his peers on days he doesn't have a behavior issue (resolved now).  He enjoys playing superhero or video game characters on the playground is very imaginitive but has big self esteem issues so frequently will only pick certain children to play with.  He especially avoids the ones playing ball or hanging from monkey bars.  He is not incredibly focused on only one subject matter except he enjoys playing a particular game with a couple of friends.

He is sensitive to other emotions also.  Asked to be removed from the reward program after he felt he was better able to control his emotions because it wasn't fair to the other kids.  He is also very expressive.
Can you be very expressive in facial features, body movement, language and tone of voice, imaginitve empathetic to others, and still have aspergers?  The teachers and counselors at his school are also shocked by the diagnosis.  Was the Dr. just wrapped up in the fact that our family is education focused and he performs highly on the testing or do we really have an Aspergers child?

My impression of social problems of an Aspergers child is they fail to interpret others emotions.  Is this incorrect?

If your son was tested properly they should have given you a full report and that would show you exactly why he got the diagnosis. You may ask the Dr. for this. It will give the conclusions and scores to the tests he took and exactly where he would fall on the spectrum (or may not be on the spectrum)...it's not just a "feeling" thing...he should have done the proper testing and you deserve the full report.
Hope this all gets straightened out for you soon.,
Take care,
Carolyn

I totally agree with Carolyn (twinkleblazzer). If the Dr gave him the diagnosis of Asperger's, you deserve to know exactly why and, of course, if you doubt his diagnosis, you can take the findings to another Dr for a second opinion.

Mariann
