Risperdal Withdrawl(withdrawal)

Risperdal Withdrawl(withdrawal)

My 8yr old son has been taking Risperdal for over 2yrs.  Recently his meds have not been working. He has been having very violent episodes.  I call them his terrets episodes because I sometimes wonder if he can control what he's doing.  He will cuss, scream, headbutt things, hit, kick, ect.......
So I decided to wean him down off his medication and go from there.  He takes 3 different meds.  .40mg strattera, .20mg Prozac, and 1.5mg Risperdal.  I started with the Risperdal first since I thought that's where most of the problem was coming from.  I took it down .5mg a week.  Well this past thursday he stopped taking the risperdal all together after a wk of 1mg, a wk of .5mg then stopped it.  Starting Friday night he has been sick to his stomach off and on.
I think he may be having withdrawls from the risperdal.
Last night he could not stop throwing up and his body temp kept going down. I took him to the ER and they couldn't find anything wrong with him.
Could it be that he is having withdrawls from the risperdal and what should I do since it's been 5days now since he's had any at all?  Will it go away?  Poor baby.....

B4 you decicde to wean him down, you should talk with his doctor or psychiatrist.  A lot of these meds can't be taken off cold turkey without making things worse.

When I was going off Effexor, I had to come in weekly to get my BP taken, weight and sometimes an EKG done.

I DID talk with his psychiatrist and he said to take half of all 3 for one wk and then stop taking them altogether.
So I am taking them down WAY slower than what he said to do.  I am doing one at a time and slower than what he said.
His health care DR said that it wouldn't hurt him to not take them for a wk or more.  Just stopping cold turkey.
These DR's are CRAZY!!!!!!! So I decided to NOT listen to the FAST way they wanted to just stop giving them to him and take him down slowly.
I think instead of stopping at .5mg of Risperdal I should have done another wk of .25mg and then stopped it.

I'm glad they did something for you. I did not know that. I thought they just cut you off on the Effex and left you suffering...

I probably shouldn't have done what I done, but I grew tired of it (no pun intended) and cut down myself by taking half a pill every other day or so until I ran out.  I probably faired better because I was on a low dose and was ignorant to the side effects/withdrawal symptoms.  But then again I was turned OFF when that quack doubled my dose and gave me two of the most misrable days of my life...  No sleep (couldn't even nod off in math class if I wanted. It was that bad.), streaming thoughts, and just feeling of utter chaos... I had to go back down Immediatly!

my sister who is mentally challenged has been on prozac and other meds for a long time includin resperdal and deseral her psychriatrist wants to wean her off all meds due to her age 71 and see how she does without, she as always had temper tandrums, but lately they have turned violent and this is causeing great problem where she is living, some of the care workers have refused to care for her, I also am wondering if this is not due either to being weaned off the prozac which is now down to 20mg daily or if this is due to the Resperdal, I wish doctors would consider that not all behavious come form needing medication but can be due to personalitie clashes between staff and them selves, we all have this in our lives but people like my sister do not know how to deal with it other than fight them
