Son now sees colors, has vision problems

My son has completed 150 hours of hyperbaric oxygen treatments and we have seen some remarkable results with is emotional abilities. However, near the end of these treatments, he began seeing colors as he tried to read and began having difficulty see the written page.

Two opthamologists, including the head of the local univesity, found no problems. They agreed the problems may be temporary from the HBOT treatments but suggested that somehow, according to the one, "Sometimes the mind doesn't see what the eye does. There's nothing wrong with your child's eyes."

This is terribly frustrating. Anyone?

These are a couple of things to look into that my son had.
Binocular vision.  Have they checked that his eyes are working together and focusing in on an object.  Otherwise the brain will only recognise information coming in through one eye which can lead to field of vision problems and depth perception problems as well as headaches etc.  It is rectified by eye exercises or in severe cases an operation.  The person who tests your son will need to ask him the question 'can you see two of these'.  We found he had this problem by accident when my son said 'I can see both of them'.  He was being shown a picture of a ladybird on a stick by the opthamologist.  She hadn't asked if he could see two of them.  And you know that autistic children don't automatically volunteer information or even know that their experience is different to ours.
Irlen Syndrome.  This is a recognised medical condition that some hospitals now screen for.  Alot of children with autism and dyslexia have this visual perceptual problem.  It can be from mild to severe and affects each child differently.  My son used to complain of bright lights, being able to see rainbows on the walls, things moving, depth perception problems etc and these have been rectified by wearing the tinted lenses in glasses.  Google Irlen Syndrome and also visit www. donnawilliams. net to read about her visual perceptual problems.  It is a sensory thing.
Synesthesia.  Again this is when the sensory system can be wired up differently.  In these cases colour begins to be associated with other sensory information.  Eg. my son sometimes smells in colour and will say 'this smells very very blue'.  For others there is a link with colours and numbers/letters etc. This is a very real experience for them and can be attached to any of the senses.  It can also affect learning because if numbers/letters are presented to them in different colours to the ones they associate with that number/letter then they may not even recognise it.  Google it to see what it is.
Hope that helps.
